bat size

hello i have a friend that her is going to play high school girls softball she would like to buy her a bat but i and she dont know the size in H.S. she can use i mean ( - ) size like -10 /-3 can you help thanks

Hello Frankie,

The most common size you will see is a -9 oz.  What this means is the weight is nine onces smaller than the length of the bat.  An example would be a 31 inch bat which weighs 22 onces.  I like to tell a girl to first find the correct length bat. A good way to figure this out is stand up straight, with waist bent at a 45 degree angle.  Hold the bat with the bottom hand and extend it out to the outer edge of home plate.  She should be able to touch the outside edge.  Once you determine the best length for your friend she will need to find a weight she can swing comfortably.  A stronger girl in high school may swing a bat with a -7 or -8 drop.  A weaker player may opt for a -10 to -12 drop.  I hope this was helpful.
