Dropped 3rd Strike Mechanics

Hi Jesse,

Today, with 2 outs and bases loaded, batter swung and missed for strike three, which the catcher then dropped. I signaled on the swing for a strike and then stepped away from the plate. The catcher panicked and tried to throw to first instead of just stepping on the plate for the force, and then it turned into an overthrow festival, and all 4 girls scored before it was over.

Coach of the defensive team went nuts, saying that I had already called the third out with my signal after the third strike.

What would be the correct mechanics on this as a plate umpire? Should I not signal anything if the catcher has dropped the third strike on a swing by the batter? Or was I correct in signaling the strike and then waiting. Usually, I repeat the arm motion and call "Out" once the batter is retired, or call out on the third strike if its caught cleanly?

First of all, in most leagues , a batter/runner cannot advance to first on a dropped strike if A. First base is occupied. or B. It would be the third out of an inning. Now, if your league differs from this then your mechanics are correct.You should do exactly what your doing. Your mechanics are correct.
