Fly Ball Question
Question
Here's what happened last week playing softball. A fly ball was hit far out to left field. Running back, I tried to get my glove on it. The ball bounced up off the top of my glove, hit the fence, I turned and caught it with it never touching the ground. Is the batter out or not. If not...what is ruled on the field as far as the base runners and batter advancing (how many bases)?
Answer
Hi Tom,
The batter is not out, the ball continues to be live and runners advance at their own risk for as many bases as they can get.
Once the batted ball has touched anything other than a defensive player it can not be legally caught. In this case the ball hit the fence which is considered the same as the ground. It makes no difference if it hit your glove first.
