Question about interference
Question
Mark,
This happened in our slow-pitch softball game last night.
The defense botched a pop-up when the third baseman and shortstop got confused about who was to catch the pop-up. It bounced away from them. The pitcher ran to cover 3rd, and the 2nd baseman ran toward the play to take a throw. For some reason, he was standing about 10 ft off 2nd base towards 3rd, pretty much in the base path. The runner, being very fast, rounded 2nd base, and collided with the 2nd baseman about the time the ball arrived. He failed to catch it, and it got past him, allowing the runner to reach 3rd base.
Question...was there interference on this play? If so, on whom was it to be called?
Thank you for your response.
Answer
Hi Steve,
If F4 did not yet have the ball when R1 collided with him we would have obstruction and protect the runner between the bases he was obstructed.
If F4, the ball and R1 all arrive at the same time we would have nothing and play on.
I can't see how there would be any interference on this play.
