Ball hits home plate
Question
ASA slow pitch - a batted ball hits home plate and rolls in front of home plate between the foul lines. I believe that the ball is fair, because it was still in fair territory. An umpire called a dead ball because it hit the plate. What rules in the ASA rule book would clear this up?
Answer
Hi Jim,
By def....A fair ball is a batted ball that is 1st touched or settles over fair territory.
"An umpire called a dead ball because it hit the plate." I don't know where they got that rule, ASA has no such rule and a batted ball hitting just home plate has nothing to do with anything re: a dead ball
Home plate is fair territory (not that this enters into this ball being fair) in front of home plate is fair territory, this is a fair ball. The umpire was incorrect, badly.
