Non attached 2nd.base
Question
ASA rules. We were playing on a field with non secure bases. My player hits a ball and heads to second base. Their shortstop accidently kicks the base as she is trying to field the ball. My player stops running towards the base and moves towards where the base was kicked. She did not slide, and she stopped to go to where the base was moved.
Their were 2 umpires on the play. The discussed after 4 min. they ruled that she was out because in their judgement they felt the throw would have beat her to the base. Even though my runner stopped.
Answer
Hi Ron,
I can't help you much here, I've never umpired with bases that were not secured and never had a play such as this.
You're player should have headed to where the base was originally and if she beat the throw to that spot we have an easy answer, but I can understand a young player's confusion.
So what to do, we have no rules that address this and we have to rule something. My logic giving benefit of the doubt to the runner would be if she would have made the original base, safe, if not, I would have an out.
