Runner entering team area
Question
This happened in a 12U game. Runner on 3rd, 1 out. Batter strikes out but
catcher drops the ball. Batter runs to first and catcher throws to first - not in
time. Meanwhile, the runner on third tries to score and misses home plate
and runs into the dugout. Catcher calls for the ball to tag the runner (who is
now trying to come back onto the field). Umpire calls the runner out for
missing home and leaving the field of play. The manager went berserk. Is the
umpire right or wrong?
Answer
Hi Douglas,
The umpire was correct.
IMO the manager that went "berserk" needs to apologize to the umpire and his team for not knowing the rules of softball and in not doing so making a jerk of himself.
When a runner abandons a base and enters the team area or dugout during a live ball they are out. Because the defense appealed missing the base the runner is out. They cannot return to the field in order to re-touch the base.
In cases where the runner misses the plate the catcher needs only to have the ball and touch the plate on the appeal, she does not have to tag the runner if the former is easier.
