Does the run score
Question
Ther is one out. There is a man on first and one on Third. The batter hits a fly ball to center. The ball is caught. The runner on third tags and crosses the plate. The runner on first was a little too far off first and gets doubled up before he can return to first to tag up. The runner on third did cross the plate before completion of the double play, however, the runner at first was out by a force. Does the run score.
Answer
HI Daniel,
"the runner at first was out by a force"
that's not correct, although I know it kind of looks like one.
a force out is an out which may be made only when a runner loses the right to the base that a runner is occupying...
The runner has not lost the right to occupy the base and this is considered a timing play and not a force play so if R1 scored before R2 is out on appeal (this happens to be a live ball appeal)...the run would indeed count.
