Batter Hit by pitched bounced Ball
Question
Hi, first thanks for taking my question!! My question is two fold. Girls ASA 12-U. If the batter attempts to get out of the way of an pitch ball while in the batter's box and hit by an bounced pitched ball. Second, if the batter does not attempt to get out of the way of a bounced ball and again is struck by the pitch.
Is the ball dead immediately at the moment of contact with the batter since it is an bounced pitch?
Thanks!!
Best,
Al
Answer
In both cases the ball is dead when it hits the batter. In the first example first base is awarded. In the second case a ball is awarded to the batter. First base is then awarded if it was ball four.
It doesn't matter if the ball bounces before it reaches the batter it is still live and it is still a legal pitch. The rule book specifically states that a pitch that "touches the ground prior to reaching the plate and the batter does not swing is a ball". If the batter swings, it is a strike.
