Question
Runner at first leads after the release of the ball from the pitcher and stays 10-15 feet off the bag while catcher throws ball back to pitcher. Runner is trying to bait pitcher to throw back to first. My question is, when is the play over if runner stays off bag, but does not move and pitcher makes no attempt at the runner...?
Answer
Hi Mike,
When a runner is stationary, off base and the pitcher has control of the ball in the circle, the runner must immediately attempt to advance to the next base or immediately return to the base left.
Immediately does give the runner some time to recognize the situation (ie control of the ball), some umpire use 1001, 1002, out, but....
