Dropped Third Strike/Baserunning
Question
QUESTION: Runner on third base with less than two outs and there is a dropped third strike. The right-handed hitting batter/runner initially begins to return to her dugout, taking several steps. After several seconds, she then takes off across the infield toward first base. Should she have been deemed out at this time or must the catcher tag her or throw to first to record the out? Thanks!

QUESTION: Is she not out of the baseline?
Answer
Hi Mike
A "baseline" is an imaginary line directly between the bases
A "basepath" is a line directly between a base and the runner's position at the time a defensive player is attempting a tag.
We have no rules for being out of the "baseline" and only can you be out if you run out of the "basepath" trying to avoid a tag.
As long as she didn't enter the dugout she can attempt to advance to 1st from her position at the time.
