foul tip -out?

Question
During a game a batter foul tips the ball directly into the catchers glove, no elevation of the ball. Umpire called the batter out pitch would have been strike two. Does the ball have to be elevated on any foul except third strike?

Answer
Hi Rich,

A "foul tip" is a batted ball that goes sharply and directly to the catcher's glove or hand and is legally caught by the catcher.  A "foul tip" is NOT an out unless it is the 3rd strike on the batter.  A caught foul tip in fp or sp on 0 or 1 strike is just a strike.

Now a "foul ball" does not go sharply and directly....but has a perceptible arc AND/OR the catcher has to move their glove or hand.  It no longer has to go over the batter's head.  This is an out if legally caught on any count on the batter.
