advancing a runner
Question
This just happened yesterday during a tournament game my grandaughter was playing in. We had 2 outs on our opponents, a batter hit the ball to shortstop she over threw the first baseman, the right fielder went for the pass ball and the second baseman made an advance to second base and the coach told the runner to run to second. The runner advanced to go but stopped and looked at the right fielder and the runner went back to first. The coach said our second baseman interfered with the runner. And the field umpire said yes that is why the runner went back to first. But the home umpire said the second baseman did not interfere with the runner. The homeplate umpire told the field umpire that was cheating. So we protested and the Director said it would be a judement call. SO they advanced the runner to 2nd. We were in the last inning and the score was 0 to 0. The runner managed to advance home and they won. Ok here is the other problem. Every time we play this team this man umpires their game. The umpire that made the call is there junior varisty coach for high school. He always finds a way to make a certain call that makes us loose to them. A lot of people and even other players from other teams were watching and other coaches said the same thing about this umpire. I was told this was an illegal call and it was called a crash call. Could you tell me if this is what it is called. And if there is some way we can stop him from calling any of there games.
Answer
Hi Melissa,
F4 would not interfere with the runner, the defense would obstruct.
If F4 obstructed the runner it is very possible they would be awarded 2nd base. You said something about a crash call, if F4 w/out the ball had contact with B1 I would have obstruction. but I didn't see the play and really can't tell from your question what happened.
I know of no way to replace the umpire, it's up to the director if they feel something is a problem with him.
