Running backwards to avoid tag on bunt
Question
Runners on 2nd & 3rd. Batter bunts ball or puts ball in play down 1st base line... 1st basemen fields the ball then trys to tag runner. Runner trys to avoids tag so other runners can advance, by running backwards. batter is called out for running backwards. Is there a rule regarding running backwards and does it only apply to 1st base?
Answer
Hi Lisa,
the b-r is out, the ball is dead and runners return to the last base touched at the time of the dead ball ASA 8-2-h
it applies only to a b-r stepping backward toward home plate (between home and 1st) to avoid or delay a tag by a fielder
mark
Runner turning left instead of right at first base.
