Question
Regarding the question about the fielder catching a fly ball and then going over the outfield fence - I was under the impression that that was the same as when the fielder catches a foul fly ball and then steps out of play; the batter is out and any runners would get one base.  Is the homerun fence different than the out of play lines on the sides of the field when determining base awards?  Thanks!

I referenced the NFHS rule book on this before answering your original post.  I believe that the home run is handled exactly the same as the foul ball scenario.

Rule 5.1.i

The ball becomes immediatley dead when:

i, a fielder, after catching a fair or foul batted ball (fly or line drive), leaves the field of play by stepping with one foot or by falling into a designated deadball area (i.e. bench, dugout, stand/bleacher, etc.)

There is no mention of any base award.

Absent any base award, you fall back to what happens when the ball becomes dead, any runners return to the last base touched.
