throwing your glove
Question
I was playing softball last night and a outfielder threw his glove at the ball I hit. What is the rule for throwing your glove at a softball in the outfield? I was held to a single and was not awarded a extra base. The shortstop told the umpire that you can throw your glove if you hit the ball without a plenty. I disagree.
Answer
Glenn,
There is no rule regarding throwing you glove until throwing your glove actually does something!
If you throw your glove and it hits a player you should be called for interference. If you throw your glove at the ball (more likely) and actually hit the ball, it is a three base award. Otherwise all you have is a defensive player with no glove on their hand!
As an umpire, I have always found it to be a bad idea to take rules advice, during the game from a player, or a coach for that matter!
