Steals
Question
Sir, I have a question on stealing. I am an official in Okinawa using ASA rules for Adult Men's Slowpitch Softball. I had a situation over the weekend. Runner on 1st base, and the batter was given intentional walk to first base. The runner on first base, jogged to 2nd and then continued at full speed to 3rd in an attempt to steal. He was thrown out by the pitcher. Should the runner been allowed to steal, or is it a dead ball when there is an intentional walk. If so, when does the ball become "live" again?
Thanks for your assistance,
Chuck
Answer
Hi Chuck,
If you are a Marine, my son is Sgt. Ben Ambrose, 2nd Marine division
The ball is dead on an intentional walk and R1 should simply be put back at 2nd, he cannot be put out during a dead ball.
The ball becomes alive again when the umpire says the magic word..... "play"
