left handed softball players
Question
I play softball for my high school. I'm left handed and I have played in field my entire life. Catching and Pitching are what I do best. My coach tells me that I cant catch because I am left handed. She always says "I bet we are the only team in the world that has a left handed catcher" I don't agree with this.
Answer
Hi Samantha,
Well, I don't think your coach meant anything bad by that comment. But typically catchers are right-handed, this assists with making faster throws to second and third base, but this is primarily a baseball issue to prevent base stealing.
It's sort of like wanting your first-baseman to be left-handed. It has to do with their position to catch the ball and their ability to throw the ball once they have it. Left-handers are just designed for first base. It's just the way the field is designed and an attempt to maximize performance.
However, for softball it really doesn't matter all that much to have a left-handed catcher. Just remind your coach that you're not going to be throwing out any base stealers. :)
With that said, have you considered trying out for first base? First base gets lots of action,
