QUESTION: SORRY FOR THE CONTINUED QUESTIONING. I FORGOT TO ASK IF THE BALL WAS NOT CATCHABLE AND THE UMPIRE FAILS TO CALL INFIELD FLY UNTIL HE HAD TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT AND THEN CALLS INFIELD FLY DOES SAME APPLY? I WOULD HAVE TO ASSUME THAT IF HE SAYS NO INFIELD FLY INVOKED, THEN THE RUNNER WOULD BE OUT FOR BEING STRUCK BY THE BALL AND THE BATTER WOULD GET AN AUTOMATIC HIT REGARDLESS IF HE MAKES IT TO FIRST AFTER DEFENSE PICKS UP BALL AND THROWS TO FIRST BEATING BATTER. AUTOMATIC OUT AUTOMATIC HIT BALL IS DEAD CORRECT? ED
Answer
Hi Ed,
No problem lazy Sunday.
I am having trouble sorting out your question but.....
If after the fact the umpires got together or a single umpire realized the ball could not be caught w/ ordinary effort, they can invoke the "god" rule, cancel the IF, R1 is still out on interference and because interference is a dead ball throwing to 1st doesn't matter. we award the b-r 1st.
