Catchers Obstruction - Mens Modified Softball

Question
In the game, there was a play where a pitcher's pitch sailed over the head of the catcher and the umpire.  After the pitch hit the backstop fence, the batter swung intentionally and striked the catcher's glove.  Since the ball went over his head the catcher had turned his head around to locate the ball when the batter initiated contact he did not expect to have his glove struck.  As soon as the batter made the contact, he asked for a catcher's obstruction and was awarded first base.  Upon pointing out to the umpire that the batter purposely swinged at the catchers mitt and there was no possibility of batting the pitched ball, he seemed unsure of his call and when the teammates of the batter started hollering, he stood by his call.  It appeared incorrect as the batter was not attempting to hit the ball but was merely looking for a free base.  Can you help clarify this circumstance?

Answer
Hi Scott,

This is not CO.    CO occurs when the catcher obstructs the batter's attempt to hit a pitched ball.  This isn't even close.  In fact had there been runners on base, attempting to steal and F2 was attempting to execute a play we could even have interference.
