ASA Question on Obstruction
Question
During a tournament game last weekend in an ASA 12U fastpitch game, we had an umpire properly call an obstruction on my second baseman. However, the runner continued past second, stopped dead, and started back towards second. Her base coach yelled at her to continue to third, which she did. In the meantime, we threw the ball to third and tagged her out. I was under the impression (maybe wrongly) that if the runner does not continue running after an obstruction that the obstruction is "off", and she would then advance at her own risk. The umpire sent the runner back to second base. Can you please clarify if this was the right call?
Answer
Hi Marc,
A runner is protected to the base they would have made had there be no obstruction. They need not try to advance to that base. They only advance at their own risk if they pass the base they would have been protected to.
By rule the runner cannot be put out between the bases they were obstructed.
