missing home plate

Question
in a recent game we had a girl going to home, she missed the plate and upon entering the dugout was declared out by the home plate umpire even though the opposing team failed to catch it or appeal it. The umpire said she was out because she left the field of play without touching home. I am quite sure this is wrong but would like your input. Thanks Doug

Answer
Hi Doug,

That would not be the correct call, leaving the playing field only means she cannot come back to touch it should she be so inclined, it does not mean she is out.  Missing a base is always an appeal by the defense.  In fact our rules tell us that a runner passing a base is presumed to have touched it unless appealed by the defense.  The umpire NEVER makes the call w/out an appeal.

You should have a little talk w/ the UIC so they can make sure this umpire is up to date on the rule book.
