conversion factor of pitching distance and mph
Question
Hi Tom:
I've been searching google for a few hours and cannot find the calculator/conversion web site for pitching distances and miles per hour of a pitched softball....so mayabe you can help.
I want to know:
what is the equivlant of a 50 mph softball pitch from 35 feet when pitched from 40 feet?
in other words, if I set the pitching machine at 50 mph from a distance of 35 feet...what speed should I set the pitching machine at if it's from 40 feet if I want it to have the exact same effect?
also, if you find this type of conversion calculator anywhere, can you please provide the link?
thanks in advance

Answer
David,
I knew I recognized this question from Algebra 1, but that was a long time ago. So I asked my 15 y/o daughter and here is the equation.
35/40 = 50/x thus 35x=2000 thus x = 57.14
Just to make sure I knew what I was talking about I calculated each speed down to feet per second and a ball thrown 50 mph will travel 35 feet in the same amount of time a ball thrown 57.14 mph will travel 40 feet, .477 seconds.
