is the batter out?
Question
with two strikes the batter leaves the batters box, goes to the dug out, hangs up her bat and helmet and sits down. the umpire goes to the dugout and beckons the girl back to bat. Was she not out for abandoning her time at bat and giving herself up?
Answer
No Dan, she is not out, this is a correctable mistake.
If she had completed her at bat and was allowed to go to first on a base on balls, a dropped third strike, a hit by pitch or a hit and then left the field of play, then she is out.
I suppose if the batter refused to go back on the field and the coach did not have a legal substitute, the umpire could hasten the situation by declaring the batter out instead of calling the third strike for not entering the batters box when requested.
