Umpire Errors

In an ASA Youth (10 and under) playoff game, the plate umpire called a dropped third strike "dead ball".  All defensive players stopped play.  The offensive runner on 3rd was already in progress to home plate.  The batter continued to 1st base.  Subsequently the umpire said he was mistaken; the ball was not dead.  He allowed the run to score and the batter to remain on 1st base.  The run scored was the winning run and the time limit was called ending the game less than 5 minutes later.  What was the right call?

Sorry, no it wasn't.  When the ball was declared dead, nothing further should have happened.  The umpire took away the defenses ability to stop the run.

Once the mistake happened, something needed to be done to fix it and neither coach likely would have been happy.

The best way to clean up the mess would have been to award first to the batter and put the runner back on third.  Not sure how things would have gone from there but this is a no win situation for either team.
