overrunning first base and going to second
Question
My daughter was playing in a game tonight when the opposing team had a girl run through first base on an overthrown ball to the first baseman. When she took second base she was well into the outfield. Is this okay ? I know you have 3 feet for a base line, and I know that the base runner establishes the base line when making the turn from first to second, but isn't this a little drastic ? When I say well into the outfield I mean even with the right fielder. Is this correct ?
Answer
Hi Josh,
it's a little extreme but the runner can do that if they wish w/out liability to be called out. They could run to the fence if they wanted to if no play was being made on them. There is no "basepath" unless a fielder is trying to tag a runner.
