Hi A,
I hope that you do not object that I changed your question from PRIVATE to PUBLIC. Don't worry, none of your personal info is displayed on the web site. Now other readers who read the Softball Library can view our exchange.
I see that softball is important to you. The fact that you are nervous is a positive sign because it shows you care. All of the other girls will be nervous, too, so you won't be alone. Here's some age-old advice: don't show up to your tryouts thirsty, hungry, tired, or worried. You'll be able to put your best foot forward if you're none of these four things. If I were a middle school softball coach the softball/physical skills of the girls wouldn't be my primary concern. I would try to fill my team with girls who showed up on time to the tryouts with their own gear and who were good listeners and not chatterboxes. I would be very appreciative if I had help carrying all the gear and setting up the hitting stations. I would look for a positive, team-first-me-second attitude and a strong work ethic. None of my starters would be whiners. One last thing, leave you jewelry and phone at home!
You said that you can bat good and can catch. That's important, but don't ignore running and throwing, too. Beginning immediately, start spending lots of time running and throwing. There is a wealth of softball instruction available online, in books, DVD's, CD's, etc. You can improve your game practicing alone but if you are able to practice with other girls you can improve more quickly. At the end of your tryouts, not during them, ask your coach how you can notch up your game. Good luck A!
