Runner hit by batted ball,
Question
In men's slow pitch softball we had a runner on third base with two out. He was standing on the bag and was hit by a ground ball before it crossed the base and before getting to the third baseman. I realize the batter is out. But what about the batter? Is he charged with an at bat or does he lead off the next inning?
Answer
Hi Dennis,
you don't tell me what org you play under and they all have different rules for this but in no major org when a runner is hit by a fair batted ball while standing on base is the batter out, nor is the runner out, unless they intentionally interfere.
In ASA play in your case we have a dead ball, b-r is awarded 1st base and other runners advance only if forced.
If you play something else other than ASA write me back and I'll look those up for you, but again the batter is not out in any major org. so I can't answer your question about the batter because it shouldn't happen.
