What is the call?
Question
If a guy is standing on first and the other guy hits a grounder to the first baseman. The runner didn't leave the base and our guy tagged the runner and then stepped on the base before the hitter got there. What's the call?
Answer
Hi Ken,
Thank you for your question. The call is smart defense and a double play! When the runner got tagged he was forced out, and the force on the batter/runner remained intact. Stepping on 1B then forced out the b/r for the second out.
If your first baseman would have stepped on 1B first, thus forcing out the b/r, it would have removed the force on the runner. After the b/r was put out, while the runner was standing on 1B, neither touching 2B, touching 1B, nor tagging the runner would have put the runner out.
