legal softball gloves for infielders
Question
what gloves are legal for catcher and other position players
Answer
Hi Robert,
Thank you again for your question. I say "again" because this answer is a revision of my original one. It includes the text from both the ASA and NFHS glove/mitt rules. I deleted the first answer because it didn't have any NFHS information, period, so this second answer is more comprehensive. I have been trying and trying, without success, to attach ASA's and NFHS's mitt/glove diagrams in an immediately viewable, readable form. If a reader is able to do so in a followup answer, I sure would appreciate it!
I hadn't given much thought to gloves/mitts before your question; umpires routinely are only concerned with bats and helmets. There is actually quite a bit of difference between the ASA and NFHS glove/mitt rules. If you want to outfit a player who will be playing both ASA and NFHS, make a careful purchase! There are several gloves/mitts that would be permitted in ASA but not in NFHS, and vice versa!
ASA Rule 3-4
A Glove/Mitt may be worn by any player. The dimensions of any glove/mitt used by any fielder shall not exceed the specifications set forth below (see drawing and specifications). (Fast pitch) The Pitcher's glove may be of one solid color or multicolored as long as the color(s) are not the color of the ball being used in the game.
NFHS Rule 1-4
Art. 1...Gloves/mitts shall:
a. Be a maximum of two colors excluding lacing and manufacturer's logo colors.
Lacing shall not be the color of the ball.
b. Not be entirely gray, white or optic in color.
c. Not have a gray, white or optic colored marking on the outside or inside that gives the appearance of the ball.
d. Be permitted to have one American flag not to exceed 2 inches by 3 inches.
e. Not be judged as distracting by the umpire.
Art. 2...The catcher shall wear a glove/mitt of any size. Gloves/mitts shall be worn by all other fielders and conform to the following maximum specifications (See Figure 1-5):
a. Height measured from the bottom edge or heel straight up across the center of the palm to a line even with the highest point of the glove/mitt: 14 inches
b. Width of palm measured from the bottom edge of the webbing farthest from the thumb in a horizontal line to the outside of the little finger edge of the glove/mitt: 8 inches
c. & d. Webbing measured across the top end, or along any line parallel to the top: 5 3/4 inches
Art. 3...Gloves/mitts shall not be designed or altered to create an adhesive, sticky and/or tacky surface.
Art. 4...An illegal glove/mitt shall be replaced immediately (8-8-15).
