Base Running Quiz...
Question
ASA rules. Runners on second and third, one out. Our girl hits a line drive to the first baseman, who catches for the second out. Girl on third is halfway home, girl on second is halfway to third. Both girls retreat to their bases as the first baseman throws the ball to third. Third baseman misses the ball, and it rolls out of play. Where do the runners go as ump calls dead ball? Does it matter whether the girl on second went back to tag up, and was on second when the ball rolled out of play? He put girl on third home and girl on second to third.
Answer
Dave,
Assuming we have a girl standing on third and second when the ball rolls out of play. Both runners are awarded home. When a ball is thrown out of play, the award is two bases from the last base touched at the time the throw is made, not when the ball leaves the field of play.
