softball; runner interference would overiede catcher obstruction on batter
Question
Runner at 2nd and the batter's swing on the pitch is obstructed
by the catcher and batted ball goes out in front of home plate
about 3-4 feet in fair territory(delayed dead ball) and the runner
from 2nd is trying to steal third base and the catcher goes and
gets the ball to try to throw out the runner going to third, and
as the catcher is throwing, the batter runs up the back of the
catcher. Now we have a dead ball situation and interference by the
batter. Some people would say, the batter's team has the option
to take the play or the penalty in the above situation, the batter and all runner(s) did not advance at least one base. So
the batter runner is awarded 1st and the runner from 2nd would be
given 3rd. And then, others say, now that you have batter interference occur after the obstruction, then the batter runner
is out and runner going to third, is returned to 2nd.Rule 8-4-3b and
penalty and exceptions 3. Thank you, please take a whack at it.
Answer
So it looks like this, batter swings at the pitch and the catcher obstructs the swing, the ball dribbles out in front of the plate, the batter and the catcher collide as the batter takes off to first and the catcher attempts to field the ball.
The book is pretty clear on this. Offensive coach has the option of taking the play by placing the batter on first and advancing the other runners only if forced.
If the offense takes the result of the play and the play was actually killed for interference by the batter, the offense would take an out and the runner remains on second. I don't think this will happen.
What would happen is, the offense takes the result of the obstruction, the batter is placed on first and the runner remains on second. 8-1-d
