Girls fast pitch leaving base too soon.
Question
Girl on 2nd leaves base before pitcher releases ball, batter hits single to left on pitch, girl on second scores and batter is thrown out trying to reach 2nd. After play ended. Umpire ruled runner that scored out. Is this a correct ruling or should the runner have been out when she left too soon and dead ball ruled.
Answer
Fred,
The leaving early is a dead ball with the offending runner put out. Nothing can happen after that. It was a no pitch. The only exception would be if the pitch was an illegal pitch. The runner would still be out, but the penalty for the illegal pitch would still be applied to the batter and any other runners on base.
