Coaches verbal interferance?
Question
10U Recreational Fastpitch, Redondo Beach, California
Twice now in back to back games against the same team, we have had the same coach intentionally scream "RUN (batter's name)!!!" when his team was batting and his player was struck out and the ball was cleanly caught by our catcher. It's happened against 2 of our catchers on my team who are my no. 1 and no. 2 players - and probably who are among the top 5 players in the league. His intention is to intentionally confuse my catchers and make them unnecessarily throw to first base to score their runner on 3rd. Both times it has worked. His intention is to draw the throw not to make sure his batter has a fair opportunity to get to first. It's trickery and seems very unsportsmanlike to me but I can't find any violation in the ASA rule book. What are your thoughts and is there anything I can reference in a rulebook? Thanks for your help.
Answer
Hi Adam,
You're correct, there's not much you can do about the other coach, HOWEVER you can train your catchers not to respond to it. They should know if it was a clean catch and the batter is out. So you need to work with them on that.
I would not use this term at this age group but in higher levels a throw on this play is known as a DMC, dumb move catcher.
A good PU should also come up with "strike 3, batters' out" and repeat it if necessary "Batters' out!!
