Two runners occupying the same base
Question
Our REC league operates under softballontario (.ca) but you can site ASA rules.
The situation : bases loaded, 1 out, batter hits a short fly, I do not call infield fly, due to degree of difficulty. The catch is not made, and the ball is live.
R1 ( from 3b ) and R3 ( from 1b ) advance, R2 does not.
SS throws to 2B, slightly high, causing 2B to stretch, but he make the catch.
At this point, R1 has not reached 2b, so I call him out on the force.
R2 has not left the base, and I call her safe, as the force has been removed.
Question #1 Did I get the call right ?
Question #2 Does the force change the situation ?
My expectation is that R2 is only out on a force at 3B, or a tag between bases. Would it be correct that:
If R3 and R2 are both on 2b, and the minder tags the base, there is no out; R3 is safe and R2 must be tagged (or forced out at 3b )
Thanks
Answer
Hi Joe,
You got the that call correct, F6 SHOULD have tagged R2 1st on the base, since they are still forced from the base by R3 and then stepped on the base for a dp since R3 is forced by the b-r. Since they did not and touched 2nd 1st, there is no force anymore on R2 and they can stay there.
If R2 and R3 are both on 2nd either a tag on R2 (anywhere the are, they are not entitled to the base) or a throw to 3rd would retire them. R3 cannot be put out standing on 2nd base.
In this case, your OP, you have a run scored, an out on R3 and runners on 2nd and 1st.
