Question
I want to start rugby at univeristy. I would like to play the poistion of lock. I am 6'3 so have the height for it, but im just under 13 stone, would this go against me getting selected? I used to play flanker a few years ago.
Answer
Joe,
Locks are chosen for several reasons the most important being strength, and compatibility with other lock.
Large players tend to be more powerful hence; the tendency to make them locks. Since the push of the scrum requires equal power from the locks, it is important that they be of near equal capability (combination of technique and strength).
Your height is important since locks are often jumpers in the line out. Therefore, you should be of a similar height to the other lock.
Note that the discussion has not mentioned mass.
If you are a former flanker, you are likely very mobile on pitch. When I have a situation similar to yours where I have a lighter, and perhaps weaker, lock, but still need him for lineouts and second phase rugby, I will tend to put him behind the stronger more stable prop (usually the tight head)
In answer to your basic question, if you are bringing more than just your size, your weight should not make a lot of difference in selection.
Good luck,
