Question
i am really small. i like playing rugby and i play scrum half. is it possible to be too small to play rugby?
Answer
Hi Sam,
I don't know your age or actual size , nor do I know the age and size of your team mates / opposition so it is hard for me to say.
I can say this, I am a relatively big fellow and have been for a long time. I was 5'9" and 16 stone / 100kg / 210lbs in my senior year of high school and yet I had team mates and opposition who where nearly half my size who did very well.
Rugby has a position for all sizes - the beauty of the game. You play in a position that really suites the smaller / zippier player so you have made a good start.
As long as you are not playing in an age or weight grade that is unnaturally above you (as can happen in small schools) you should be fine.
However if you are asking this question while playing amongst your peers then the issue may be more about confidence than size.
This is more a question of your own self confidence - believing that you are capable. Only you can decide that no matter what anyone tells you.
One of my heroes as a young boy was the Scottish captain David Sole who by any standards was a tiny prop of only 85 - 90 kgs (todays props are 110 -125 kgs! This little man captained Scotland successfully to a Grand Slam and never once conceded a push over try (in a time when that was typical way to score!)
Find your hero / mentor Sam and emulate their style, character and success.
And above all have fun, rugby should be fun.
