Second Row Binding

Question
Hello.
First off, I have been selected to play for my clubs second team, which is a big step from the under 16s I'm use to playing. However, I have a huge problem, my position is hooker, and in the league that the club plays in, you cannot play in the front row until you are 17.
The only problem I have is with the binding. As a hooker, I simply raised my arms and my props did all the binding, and on the few occasions I played flanker, I simply put my arm round the lock, so this leaves me with the question. How do I bind at second row?
Answer
Hi Neil, congratulations on making the team.
Binding at lock is actually quite simple. There are two options: around the hips or through the legs.
It may be that the rules of your league might only allow around the hips anyway so ask your coach.
When going bind, first bind to your lock you usually allow the lock behind the tight head to stand much like a hooker. The other lock comes up behind the tighthed lock reaches around and gets a good grip of jersey and then steps to the left and brings his shoulder up and under ther shoulder of the T.H. lock.
The locks are now bound. then you both go down on one knee usually outside leg down and inside knee up.
Now if you bind between the legs reach up and get a good grip of jersey and shorts at the short band of the prop and if you are the left lock grip your grip so your hand is on the right hip of the prop you are bound too.
If you bind around the hips kep your should lower under the cheeks of your prop. and grip at the hip.
This will nee some sorting out. take the time to talk with your lock prior to scrummaging and ask him what he prefers - that is the best way to go.
