Question
i am 16 yrs old and i am beginning to play rugby with my high school team>
I am 6'1 but only 148lbs
i have great endurance and have prety good speed. ie: i'm not the fastest guy on the team but i am by no means slow
My leg muscles are strong but i have a weak upper body.
I have also played keeper in soccer so i have good kicking skills.
what i am wondering is what position to try. Our team is inexperienced because in the part of canada i'm from hockey & football are the main sports.
thanks in advance
Answer
Hi Micheal, Your hight would suggest a start in the forwards maybe as lock. As a lock your legs play a big part in pushing in the scrums and your hight is good at the line outs you endurance would be an asset for forward play as they do a lot of running through out a game.
Maybe also try loose forward or number 6 & 7 they attach to the side of the scrum and its there job to follow the ball all the time and secure it. Yes upper body strength is good, but each position has different requirements.
Try those positions and let me know how you get on.
Thanks
