Question
Hello
I'm thinking of being a flanker, I am running around a field and doing press ups.
But i know there's more to do then running.
What else can I do?
Thanks
Answer
Hello George,
I shy away from prescribing work out regimes for individuals as it is a hard thing to get right in this format. I would work with a professional trainer, gym or athletics club. Some rugby clubs post work outs or have an off season training program set up so look online for more information about that.
As long as you are getting your speed, endurance and strength up to a well above average I would focus on you game / positional knowledge.
Read up on the position of flanker in books, magazines, this site with all my past answers. Study the position and the game of rugby. Learn the "big picture" strategy of teams in different weather etc.
Get as much professional rugby on TV as you can and study the guys in your position take notes on things you see them do.
Basically a flanker has to be the most athletic guy on the field and be where the ball is as much as possible either making a tackle, stealing the ball of the tackled player, being in support of a ball carrier. Think of the phrase "involved" and make that a key way to play your game.
