Question
I wanted to know how to play a winger for my team;I just started playing rugby this past year and our first game is in a few weeks. Basically my practices have been involving the basics of the game (throwing, catching, etc). In past years I was a mid-fielder for a soccer club in Germany and we were best team in the Berlin quarter, but I have a knee injurie that hurts whenever i sprint for long periods of time. So I told my coach that and he still wants me as a back, whereas I think my abilities are best applied as a forward.
My genereal Physique is about 186 cm, 134 lbs, and i can lift about 200 lbs in a squat and close to 210 with my legs in the leg press. I have long arms and legs and a small torso, but I can take a hit and I can wrap someone, but if needed I can sprint and take someone down incase they break the line.
Which position would be best for me?
Answer
Hi Sean, Even with all your information your coach will still know better than me. With that said it does appear you would best suite being a back.
However it seem like you would enjoy being a forward more, injury aside if you think you will enjoy forward more then play there.
Either way your knee will still get a lot of a work out. If you are playing forward properly you may actually run more than a back.
