Rugby Union vs. Rugby League

Question
I would love to become more familiar with Rugby and how the organization of the sport actually works. For example, what is the difference between the Rugby Union and the Rugby League? Which is more popular? Where do they play? Is one greater than the other? Which are the most leagues/unions?
Please give me as much information as you know. I am very interested, but hesitant to believe the websites I am running across.
Also, if you have some recommendations of Rugby Websites-that would be great!
Thanks in advance!
Answer
Hi Azra,
Initially the difference between Union and League was that League was professional and Union was strictly old school amatuer. Now that has changed so it is no longer a factor.
The basic differences are that Union has an 8 man scrum that is much more structured and league has a 5 man scrum that is basically a quick put in and very loose. Also league has no line outs just a simple throw in to a single player ( I think I am not a league expert). A whole league team has 13 player and Union has 15.
If you are familiar with touch rugby then all you need to think is that league is just like touch rugby but with tackles. The takle is a stoppage in play with the tackled player required to roll the ball under his legs behind him to a "dummy half" who passes the ball out. This scenario is allowed 5 times then on the 6th tackle they must with score or kick. Wit hrugby a tackled player is not a stoppage hence the use of mauls and rucks.
For Rugby I highly suggest "Rugby for Dummies" but I can't suggest anything for League.
