Question
Hey, I'm a 16 year old and I've just moved to the UK from Tanzania in East Africa for my last two years of school. I've played quite a lot of rugby in the past, but back home we never really played with proper positions as we never had enough people on the team. However, i want to join the school rugby team where I'm going, and i would like to know what position you think I'm best suited for. I'm about 5'11 and weigh about 187 pounds. I'm quite well built, and I'm reasonably fit and my endurance isn't bad (I've recently started running three miles a day and I've climbed MT. Kilimanjaro). I'm not extremely fast, but I'm faster than i look, and i was wondering if you could help me to decide on a position to focus on... i was thinking either a centre or a forward would be good? Anyway, i would be very grateful if you could give me some advice.
Thanks.
Answer
Hi Nick I suggest that at your age you pick a position that you are passionate about. Accept that you will probably change positions a couple more times in your career as a player due to a coaches game plan or you personal growth. Follow your most favourite position and enjoy your rugby. Talk with your coaches and see what they think will get you the most game time and work to meet the goals they set you (ask them for some too). Learn all you can about your chosen position and be open to advice and change.
