switching from lock to outside center

Question
Hey Nick,
So I've been playing Lock for the past two years, and feel better suited as a outside center. I'm 6'1 (short for a lock) and 242 lbs. I'm quick and have good hands and reflexes but would like to learn more about the position and what I would need to be a good O. center.

thanks!

Answer
Hi Alex

I am not a strong backs coach sorry but I would start by asking a senior player to mentor you. Get as much top level rugby on TV as you can and study the OC. Take written notes. Look up modern books and magazines.

Also look up technique on UTube for OC skills and training tips it is a good tool.

Talk to your coaches for tips, expectations before during and after every game. Be open to advice and critism. Remember it will take 2 or 3 seasons to become proficiant in going from one position to another.

Simple tips are to keep on your feet, look to pass off the ball after comitting tacklers to you or passing out of the tackle. Look for your flankers and even your full back coming through to take passes from you at pace.

If the oppo line line comes up fast and flat look to pop a kick over them to run on to. Also look to make wiper kicks to the corner for your winger.

Good luck
