Question
Hi Expert,

Mi name is Martin, i live in Argentina, and i have been
playing rugby since i was 5 years of age. I am 20 years now,
I weight 72 Kilos, and I am 1,73 metres. Most of my life I
have played as a Scrum Half or as a wing. But as the years
went by, I found myself playing as a flanker last year. I am
not a very fast player, so that is one of the reasons. Next
Year I will no longer be an under20 and will play for the
seniors. I am took the decision of permanently playing as a
flanker or number eight. As my phisique is not big I base my
game in a desperate and constant tackle. But I am noticing
that my bulk and strength is not enough. How do I train
myself for having mor bulk, MORE STRENGTH, not loosing much
speed, and most important NOT PUTING INTO RISK MY SHOULDERS
articulations.
Thank you very much,
Kind regards.

Answer
Hi Martin,

I would talk to your coach and a player you might respect who knows you. I feel the move to flanker might not be the best thing. You seem to be a perfect half back. Flankers need speed in the modern game and size. To play in the seniors at your size I would look to move back to half back.

No matter what position you play to add bulk you need the right diet and weight plan. The best thing is to join a good gym with helpful knowledgable staff who will assess your current strengths and weaknesses and then set up a customer diet and weight and fitness plan for you.
