Question
hi..Im Amir Syazwan from malaysia..I am 180 cm tall and 70 kg weight..i'm turning to 18 next year..currently today, I've been playing rugby as a flanker..I can cover both openside & blindside but oftenly playing as an openside flanker..Im also sometimes playing as second row..this is because when im not fit enough, our coach will switch me to this position..Im one of the explosive and fast forward in the team..I'm also a good ball winner & crash ball..Im not strong enough to be a tackle breaker but with my speed, I can hit the line & offload the ball..that's why I be a crash ball..the problem is, im not good enough in tackling..to be a good flanker, tackling is very demanding..i always be the first person to arrive at ruck, i can read the game, i can join the line to create an 'extra man' but Im not good enough in tackle..so, which position should i stick to..whether a flanker or second row?? Or inside center..sometimes I wanted to try to play in this position too..
Answer
Hi Amir,
I always beleive that you should choose a position with these two things in mind:
1. What position do YOU enjoy the most?
2. What position on your team will get you the most game time?
Playing a position you hate defeats the point of playing rugby. The key is to figure out why you hate a position - if you just need to get better or fitter it is not the positions falt it is yours.
Playing a position you love but that is over populated in your team could see you getting no game time. I have seen many wanna-be flankers turn to be hookers just to get more game time.
You need to work on your fitness first and foremost. do that and with the other skills / talents you have you will have a better chance of playing the position you want.
