New Scrum Half

2016/7/16 9:54:44

Question
Hi,
I just started playing scrum half for an amateur rugby team in Montreal after a few months as a winger. I'm 1.75m and 60 kg, so pretty small and light. I try to compensate by a strong fighting spirit.
As a beginner scrum half, I was wondering what kind of orders I'm supposed to give to the forwards; right now they're limited to "keep moving forward" or "give me the ball". Also, I never seemed to place the fly half in an ideal position since we were never able to play out our set pieces.
If you have any other advice, it is also welcome.
Thanks,
Romain

Answer
Hi Romain,

Use any orders you like. The best scrummies are the most vocal. Try to stay consistent and talk a lot. Even grab a forward out of a maul or ruck and re-inject them in a spot they can be more useful in.

A good forward will appreciate a clear vocal scrummie as it is hard to see some times and in the "fog of war" having someone with vision to give directions is very useful.

Talk to your forwards during a quiet moment at practice maybe while you are all doing warm ups and explain why you talk so much and that it is to help them.

As for your fly half it is hard to say but you just need to walk through moves more at practice and talk things over - repeat a play over and over until you both figure it out and come up with corrective calls or "change" calls you guys need to talk a lot in a game and find a team balance between each other.
