scrum half pass
Question
hi there
im doing my level 1 coaching course this sat19th and sun 20th may 07, i have to coach a 5 minute session the session is to introduce and develop the scrum half pass, sounds easy ....i wish!haha i havent got the faintest idea on it, it says one handed passing that i have to coach but i thought from the scrum half position the way you stand over the ball it would really only be possible to pass with 2 hands? maybe im wrong can you help maybe with an explanation and or pictures. sorry to ramble on
cheers

Answer
Hi Brendan, I will do some more research but for now I think they are simply trying to encourage teaching a "flat" stance.
This would be when a half back comes to the back of a ruck / maul or scrum and has his feet in a neutral position rather than the more traditional way of favoring a right or left foot forward depending on which way the game is going to flow from the break down.
A flat stance encourages the half back to keep his "head on a swivel" and keep a neutral "flat" foot stance so he can decide which way to pass (left or right) based on the best option for play rather than being committed to a right or a left pass because that is the way he has placed his feet.
Using one hand simply forces the need for both feet to be flat to the base of the break down and can teach a half back how to pass equally as well with either hand.
Drill: start with a halfback in a flat stance with two line of player behind him; one line on his left and the other to the right. have the first player on each line run out and call "left" or "right" and make him pass with only one hand.
I highly recommend "coachingrugby.com" as a resource.
I hope this helps.
