Size and potential
Question
I was recently introduced to rugby and I was interested in playing. I played football for 6 years and soccer for about the same when I was younger. But now I'm 6'3" and weigh almost 300 lbs. I was wondering if rugby would be a good sport for me to play considering my size and all of that. So my question is do I have the potential to become a real or even good rugby player?
Answer
G'day Babatunde,
Sounds like your size is not an issue. I don't know how old you are or how fit you are or if you have any injury issues either.
Rugby is like anything, you get out of it what you put in. I suggest joining a club that has someone in it that you know. Come in humble and open to learn. Expect to make mistakes and do your best.
As long as you are having fun go for it. If you have the desire to play at any level communicate to your coach and study rugby as much as you can. You will probably be a prop or a number 8. Feel out each position and see which you like best. Pick top players on national teams to emulate, watch as much rugby as you can on tv, read books, talk rugby, study rugby and have fun with it.
Rugby is more than the game, you will meet great people, from all over the world and enjoy a beer or two in the process.
You can be as real or good a rugby player as you like, just be open to learning from anyone willing to help. Put in the work and study the game like a chess player. Above all have fun mate.
Welcome to rugby! I wish you well and feel free to ask for more advice.
