Question
Hi I have never played rugby before and this spring I am playing fro a local club. I want to know the rules of rugby, techniques, and what position is best suited for me. I am 5' 11", 135 lbs. I am wiry, a fast runner, and i wrestle so i have good strength. I can carry people on my back and withstand hits and be able to continue running. I am also good at dodging, juking, and i can tackle well. Thanks for any help
Answer
Hi Ryan,
It looks like you need "rugby 101". I suggest reading the books;
"Rugby for Dummies" followed by "Rugby,Skills,Tactics and Rules"
Rugby for dummies needs to be read over a number of times, take notes mark pages - make it your rugby text book.
All the while you should watch as much rugby as possible on TV. The world cup is on and if you have cable / satellite the channel "Verses" (VS.) has rugby as well as Setanta and on line at Media Zone / the rugby channel.
I can see you will be a back. If you are exceptionally fast go for winger. As you learn more and find out your skill level and tolerance for the game try out other positions. If you are young (i.e.: under 18) the chances are you will put on a good 20 pounds over the next 7 years with diet and exercise programs. This may see you slot in at center or if your skills are good then 1st 5 or even half back.
Enroll your team mates and coach to help and be a good team man, never be too proud to learn no matter how long you are in rugby and help those who come into the game after you to learn as well. That is the true spirit of rugby.
Above all have fun.
Stay at Flanker or move to center?
